Finding Stability Through Red River Community Corps
As an 18-year-old recent graduate, Grace found herself at a crossroads, uncertain about her next steps — a feeling many young people face after finishing school. Red River Community Corps (RRCC) provided her with more than just a service placement — it offered her a meaningful way to gain experience, build a foundation for her future and discover her strengths.
Finding RRCC at the Perfect Time
Grace first learned about RRCC from her mom, a former program participant now teaching high school. Grace was pregnant and actively seeking work to provide for her growing family. Her mom’s encouragement to join RRCC was based on the program’s deeper impact: “It’s more than just a living allowance; it’s a chance to grow and give back,” said Grace. Inspired by her mom’s success in transitioning to teaching, Grace decided to explore what RRCC could offer.
Making a Difference in the Classroom
At just 18, Grace has already begun making a real impact in her community. Through Red River, Grace serves as a Literacy Remediation Specialist for Pre-K and Kindergarten students at Braggs Public Schools in Braggs, Oklahoma. Her half-time schedule—working five days a week from 7:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.—lets her balance personal responsibilities while making a lasting impact in her community.
In this role, Grace helps young children develop crucial skills, like writing their names, recognizing letters and learning positive social behaviors. “I’m there to guide them through the little moments that have a big impact,” said Grace. Whether it’s tying a shoe, encouraging a shy child or offering a high-five, Grace’s hands-on support makes a difference every day in the lives of those who need it most. Because of Red River Community Corps, Grace can make a difference in her community while exploring her interests and developing skills that will shape her future career.
Building Bonds and Overcoming Challenges
One of Grace’s favorite aspects of her job is the love she receives from her students. “They barely know me, but they always say, ‘We love you, Miss Grace.’ Their affection reminds me every day why I do this work,” said Grace.
Like any rewarding role, Grace’s job has its challenges. “The biggest challenge is that every child is parented differently, so I have to figure out the best way to connect with each one,” said Grace. “And with 26 kids, it can be tough to give everyone the attention they need.”
Despite these obstacles, Grace has grown in patience and empathy, recognizing that every child requires a unique approach and understanding. And, in many ways, this experience is preparing her for the child on the way.
Personal Growth and the Rewards of Service
For Grace, the most rewarding aspect of her work is creating a supportive, safe space for her students. “It’s important to me to make school a place where kids feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes and learn without fear,” said Grace. Grace's time with RRCC and Braggs Public School sparked an unexpected passion for teaching, revealing a career path she had never considered before. This transformative experience was made possible through her involvement with RRCC.
Why Others Should Join RRCC
“It’s a role where you really feel like you’re making a difference,” said Grace.
For someone recently out of high school and exploring their next steps, Grace’s story highlights how community service programs like RRCC provide more than just a service placement — they offer a bridge to future opportunities. Grace is gaining experience and skills that will help her build a strong foundation for her future career and life, making a lasting impact on those around her.
If you’re a recent graduate looking for a way to gain experience, explore potential career paths, and make an impact, RRCC offers the perfect environment to do just that.
