Alumni Spotlight: Jeremiah Thomas

Red River Community Corps (RRCC) members bring their talents and energy to support our partner sites, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in Oklahoma.

In this member spotlight, we talk with current RRCC member Jeremiah Thomas about his time with Red River.

Jeremiah has served for the past two years at City Center, an RRCC partner site. City Center is a nonprofit bringing relief and restoration to youth and families living in under-resourced neighborhoods in Oklahoma City.

What is your favorite memory working with RRCC?

Jeremiah: My favorite memory is helping the City Center's after-school program. The City Center lacks the resources to run an after-school program on its own, so thanks to Red River and its members we're able to offer this service to 35 under-resourced children. I take pride in knowing that my efforts are making a significant impact on the community.

Tell me about the opportunities provided by RRCC.

Jeremiah: Red River allows me to contribute to my community and provide essential services to children in need. It also supports me in completing my education and advancing my career. I wanted to get my master's in social work and become a licensed therapist. When I started with Red River, I fell in love with it and realized this position could help me achieve my goal of becoming a clinician and serving my community for the rest of my life.

What opportunities were you provided through RRCC?

Jeremiah: Red River has opened up a lot of opportunities for me, especially by connecting me with people who can support my future goals. One of the things I value most is that Red River feels like a second family. They truly have your back and always keep your best interests in mind, doing everything they can to help you reach your goals and succeed. They've supported me with school and made a lasting impact on me, teaching the importance of giving back.

What did you learn from your time at RRCC?

Jeremiah: Since joining Red River, I've experienced a lot of personal growth, becoming a stronger leader and mentor while gaining a better understanding of the value of community. Growing up in a single-parent household with many siblings, I faced my own challenges, and now I have the privilege of serving kids who are navigating similar situations. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back and guide them through experiences I’ve had myself.

How did your time with RRCC help guide your future plans?

Jeremiah: My time at Red River and City Center played a key role in identifying my passion for helping children. Each day, I focus on mentoring and counseling, offering guidance and support to young people. This experience was instrumental in shaping my future career goals and professional development.

What would you tell someone interested in becoming an RRCC Member?

Jeremiah: I’d tell them three things: First, you should absolutely go for it. Second, it will genuinely change your life, not just in terms of personal growth but also in how you connect with your community. And third, it will likely be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. The experiences, relationships and lessons you gain from being part of something bigger than yourself are invaluable. You’ll leave with a deeper sense of purpose and a real understanding of how much of an impact you can have on others.
