Alumni Spotlight: Ash Davenport

Red River Community Corps (RRCC) members bring their talents and energy to support our partner sites, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in Oklahoma.

In this alumni spotlight, we talk with former RRCC member Ash Davenport about her time with Red River.

Ash served for two years at Palomar, an RRCC partner site. Palomar is a nonprofit providing services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse and human trafficking.

What is your favorite memory working with RRCC?

Ash: Oh gosh, there are so many! My favorite experience has been mentoring kids and helping them grow. Seeing them recognize their own worth and potential has been incredibly rewarding.

Tell me about the opportunities provided by RRCC.

Ash: Red River allows me to contribute to my community and provide essential services to children in need. It also supports me in completing my education and advancing my career. I wanted to get my master's in social work and become a licensed therapist. When I started with Red River, I fell in love with it and realized this position could help me achieve my goal of becoming a clinician and serving my community for the rest of my life.

What did you learn from your time at RRCC?

Ash: At Palomar, I learned a lot about providing direct services to kids and adults, as well as how to work at a nonprofit organization. I developed strong relational skills and practiced trust-based relational intervention in the children's sanctuary. Through various trainings, I gained additional skills and learned how to truly connect with the kids I was working with.

How did your time with RRCC help guide your future plans?

Ash: My time at Red River has been transformative, helping me solidify my path in life and discover my true passions. It made me realize I want to become a clinical therapist for children exposed to trauma. I feel lucky to have served with Palomar through Red River, and to have discovered this passion.

Why would you suggest someone become a RRCC Member?

Ash: Get involved, it makes you a better person! Red River is a special program that I would encourage anyone to try. It allows you to explore your passions and find your purpose in life, all while giving back to the community. In our daily lives, we often forget the importance of giving back, but it’s incredibly fulfilling and absolutely worth it.
